Erminda da Nossa Senhora de Aracelis
Approximately 1 km from Monte Vale we can find the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Aracelis, a place of worship since ancient times. The chapel is built on an isolated elevation in the middle of a vast plain, and is called “Altar of Heaven” and, according to legend, it overlooks six other chapels in Alentejo and the Algarve: Remédios in Alcaria, Cola in Ourique, Guadalupe in Serpa, Castelo in Aljustrel, Saúde in Martim Longo and Piedade in Loulé.
Besides being a place of worship, it is also a privileged place for observing birds such as the Eared, Little Bustard and the Cranes. The pilgrimage is annual and there has been, since many centuries ago, a traditional pilgrimage that takes place on the last weekend of August.
It is also tradition that the region’s farmers get together to ask the Saint for a good agricultural year, while the image circulates around the Ermida. The centre of the town of Castro Verde is 21.2 km away by car (IP2).
